The IATA is incorporated/established as an association on May 21, 1984.

William “Pinky” Newell passes away.

David Craig becomes the first president.

The IATA has 106 members, including 62 certified athletic trainers (ATs).

1985

IATA seeks to create a licensure bill and a state representative to sponsor the bill in legislation.

A “faculty-trainer” bill is proposed jointly with the Indiana State Department of Education.

IATA hosts GLATA Winter Meeting in Merrillville.

IATA hosts first Fall Meeting at Butler University.

IATA has 147 NATA members.

1986

A survey of Indiana high schools is taken to learn more about schools serviced by a certified athletic trainer.

297 out of 390 schools report.

Only 11.2% have AT coverage.

Ralph Reiff (2nd President).

1987

Indianapolis hosts Pan American Games.

Athletic Trainers volunteer to provide athletic training services.

Marje Albohm and Jay Bradley coordinate medical care services.

Faculty-Trainer Bill is passed by the House but read in the Senate.

IATA has 200 NATA members.

1988

IATA releases a position statement on improving health care in high schools.

IATA hosts the GLATA Winter Meeting in Indianapolis.

Hunter Smith (Indianapolis Colts) represents IATA.

1990

IATA newsletter approved for professional publication four times a year.

Mike Ferrara is first editor. Active Ankle is the first sole sponsor.

First Fall IATA Meeting and Educational Symposium held.
